the power of letter writing

Ainda as cartas...

Still the letters...
See this lovely short TED talk about the power of handwritten letters. As march is reaching an end, I'm already gathering beautiful papers to write another letter to a friend.

handwritten letters

Eu adoro correio tradicional.

I love snail mail. The unexpected, the attention, the affection that usually involves preparing and sending a letter or postcard are unparalleled. A letter is more than sending news, is also an offer of time, a good so scarce these days. With facebook, email, sms, telephone we can be closer to our friends but a letter delivers a little more of us.

This year I decided to write a letter a month  to a friend. So many months away from old time friends have messed with me and I want to return to this ancestral habit and reserve a few hours every month to write about me and my life.

Until now I have sent two letters and I'm loving writing them. I take the opportunity also to reflect and balance on the previous month, and this process is useful for me. Once sent, I eagerly wait the replies. Better than to send, is to receive!

a five year memory book

I have the habit of keeping my previous years diaries and now and then I open one to know what I was doing on the same day x years ago. For example, referring to my 2005 calendar I can recall that on March 6 I was in Kyoto and visited this temple (my favorite in Kyoto). In 2011 it was a Sunday and I was in a local craft fair selling my photos. I enjoy these memory trips, allowing me to remember trivial and good times.

Some time ago, I don't remember how, I found the same idea yet more structured: a journal for 5 years. The idea is surprisingly simple, each leaf is reserved for one day of the year and divided into 5 parts, one for each year. There aren't weekdays (because they change every year) only 365 sheets.

I started on January 1st (but you can start any day!) and I have managed to write every day. As each sheet is divided into 5 parts there isn't much space which is fine, I just do a little summary of the day. This first year won't be very interesting but from 2014 on will be fun to remember what I did, I thought, where I was, who I was in previous year(s).

----------

There are no rules about what to write. I am very descriptive: I was there, done that, been with this and that. Often I write down emotions: it was a good day, I liked to go there, enjoyed being with X, I'm happy,  things are moving on, I'm sad, I'm bored, this is not going anywhere. Some people create a list of prompts, one a day to help but I've bee taking it easy, nobody needs another obligation.

I researched a lot about these diaries, size, design, price and ended up buying this from Chronicle Books. I'm quite happy, has a good size, the paper has good texture and thickness, it's been a pleasure to write.

But there are other options. In this post you can find a description of various journals, including a file for free download for those who want to print their own journal.

And you, what do you think of the idea of noting every day?
