splash!

diving

Now that temperatures are dropping I remembered that 3 weeks ago I was actually splashing in an outdoor swimming pool in Hampstead Heath.

If someone had told me that in October I would be taking my swimming suit on an outdoor pool in London I would have send them to the doctor! But it happened and it was great! Crowded, noisy, cold water, hot sun and marvellous!

There are several outdoor pools troughout the city and, if you prefer something more "natural" you can actually swim in Hampstead Heath ponds!

Still weather has been gorgeous. I love cold sunny autumn days!

one month

So without really noticing my first month in London flew by!
It has been extremely rich and also a rollercoaster of emotions but I've been hanging on. Maybe, like the image I took above, still feeling a bit lost.
London is a weird city... every 1 in 3 people I cross in the street is not speaking english. Maybe I can give you an idea of how "foreigner" this city is when, at the supermarket, the cashier asked me where I was from. I hadn't even spoke and I've been told I look english (well, probably not but what is english that's my point?). Is it that maybe everyone is always from other place?
Everybody seems to be here in some kind transitional phase, even english people, even if it's been 10 years in town!
It is not helping that in my course we are around 43 students from 18 different countries and only 3 are english (and the only one from London has an italian mother and a japanese father, very londonner I guess). With so many different nationalities and cultures around I sometimes feel I actually moved to Babel Town. I also wonder how this feels for an english person? Do they love this gigantic multicultural community or do they feel their culture is being destroyed by this flow of people?
And then there is London, beautiful London, Victorian London with it's brick facades, with the pubs, with the double-decker bus, with the amazingly beautiful and amazingly big parks. London like an odd scenario to woman in burka, punks, yuppies and young portuguese girls trying to feel a little less lost.

via pan am

above image by me crossing the andes between argentina and chile.

Via PanAm is a beautiful trip that photographer Kadir Van Lohuizen decided to embark on to capture the big theme of "migration". The americas (from north to south) have an incredible history on this subject and Kadir's photographs have a very poetic sense.
It is also an curious project because it was developped as an iPad app and there is an interesting reflection on these new digital supports on the british journal of photography.

03 October 2011

6 months can be a long time. 6 months fly so quickly.

I'm writing these words from my old but confortable appartment in Camden, London. It's been some exciting days (feels like weeks) and I'm still digesting so much novelty.
Since it's been about six months since I last posted properly I decided it was fair to give you an idea of the last months before moving to London.

I've seen my friends babies grow so much and some new ones have joined the family. I've been to family meetings.

I've been out for dinners at crazy chinese restaurants and mistery meals with new friends. I've stayed in for dinner with close friends.  I've been on parks having yummi food in picnics. I've celebrated 5 years of a great love.

I went to my first bullfight. I've seen a friend getting married. I've been dancing for days in a music festival. I've sold my photographic prints on fairs and had a great foreign fan. My grandma has helped me :) I've applied for a master and have been accepted.

I've done a journey of a lifetime from Saint Petersburg to Beijing by train. I've had the world staying at my place with couschsurfing. I've visited my childhood places. We've left the appartment where we were happy. I've hurried to the hospital to visit my grandma. I've left Lisbon for London.

And here I am. Now. Ready.

Ps:
On a side note, I will write this blog in english. It's a way to get more used to my new everyday language. I am by no means fluent in english but hope you can all understand what I write. I would love to translate what I write to portuguese but, honestly, I don't think I'll have the time :). Thank you for understanding.

a wonderful month!

and i love a commitment that forces me to do something i love!

the bermuda triangle of productivity

Só substitui "twitter" por "google reader". Raios partam este vício internético!
Alguém desse lado também se sente sugado pela internet?

Post original aqui e podem comprar o poster aqui.

I would only replace "twitter" for "google reader". Damn you internet addiction!
Do you also feel sucked by the internet stream?
